Why convert DOCX to Markdown?

  • Docs-as-code — keep documentation in Git, review changes line by line.
  • Note-taking apps — bring Word content into Obsidian, Logseq or Notion.
  • Static sites — Markdown is the native format for Hugo, Jekyll, Astro and Docusaurus.

How the conversion works

The Word document is first converted to semantic HTML with mammoth.js, then each element is translated into GitHub-flavoured Markdown. Characters that would accidentally be read as Markdown syntax are escaped.

What is a DOCX file?

DOCX is the default document format of Microsoft Word since 2007, standardised as Office Open XML (ISO/IEC 29500). A DOCX file is a ZIP archive containing XML files for the text, styles, numbering and comments, plus a media folder for images.

Because it is an open standard, DOCX also opens in Google Docs, LibreOffice, Apple Pages, WPS Office and Hancom Office. Older Word files with the .doc extension use a different binary format and are not the same as DOCX.

What is a Markdown file?

Markdown (.md) is a lightweight way to write formatted text using plain characters: # Heading, **bold**, *italic*, - list item and so on. It stays readable as raw text, yet converts cleanly to HTML.

Markdown is used everywhere from GitHub README files and documentation sites to note-taking apps such as Obsidian, Notion exports and many static site generators.

Frequently asked questions

What is converted?

Headings (from Word's heading styles), paragraphs, bold, italic, strikethrough, links, bulleted and numbered lists including nested lists, block quotes and tables.

What happens to images?

Images are left out, because a Markdown file cannot contain them without enormous embedded data. Use DOCX to HTML if you need the images.

Are tables supported?

Yes, as GitHub-flavoured Markdown tables. Merged cells are not part of Markdown, so complex tables may need manual touch-ups.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
