Why convert ODS to CSV?

  • Data exchange — CSV is accepted by virtually every database and tool.
  • Automation — process the data with scripts and command-line tools.

How the conversion works

The ODS workbook is read with SheetJS and each selected sheet is written as CSV, with dates in ISO format and values quoted where needed.

What is an ODS file?

ODS (OpenDocument Spreadsheet) is the open, ISO-standardised spreadsheet format used by LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice, and widely required by public institutions in Europe. Like XLSX, it is a ZIP archive of XML files containing sheets, values, formulas and styles.

Excel and Google Sheets can open ODS files, but converting to XLSX gives the best compatibility with Microsoft Office users.

What is a CSV file?

CSV (comma-separated values) stores a single table as plain text: one row per line, with cells separated by commas (or semicolons or tabs in some regions). Cells that contain commas, quotes or line breaks are wrapped in double quotes.

CSV is the universal exchange format for data — almost every database, spreadsheet, CRM, bank and analytics tool can import and export it. It has no formatting, formulas or multiple sheets, and it does not record its own text encoding, which is why non-English CSV files sometimes open with garbled characters.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to multiple sheets?

Each sheet becomes its own CSV file named after the sheet, or choose "First sheet only".

Are formulas exported?

CSV stores values only, so each formula is replaced by its calculated result.

Which encoding is used?

UTF-8 with a BOM by default, so Excel shows non-English text correctly. Plain UTF-8 is also available.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
