Why convert Markdown to EPUB?
- Self-publishing — draft a book, guide or course notes in Markdown and turn it into a real e-book in seconds.
- Read your notes on an e-reader — long documentation or research notes are easier to read on an e-ink screen.
- Share — EPUB opens in every major reading app and keeps its table of contents.
How the conversion works
The Markdown is converted to HTML, cleaned, and divided into chapters at its headings. Each chapter is saved as a separate XHTML file inside the EPUB, and a navigation document and table of contents are generated from the chapter titles.
What is a Markdown file?
Markdown (.md) is a lightweight way to write formatted text using plain characters: # Heading, **bold**, *italic*, - list item and so on. It stays readable as raw text, yet converts cleanly to HTML.
Markdown is used everywhere from GitHub README files and documentation sites to note-taking apps such as Obsidian, Notion exports and many static site generators.
What is an EPUB file?
EPUB (Electronic Publication) is the most widely used open e-book standard, maintained by the W3C. An EPUB file is a ZIP archive that contains one XHTML page per chapter, CSS stylesheets, images, fonts, and a package file listing the reading order and metadata such as title, author and language.
Because the text is reflowable, EPUB adapts to any screen size. Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo and most other reading apps open EPUB natively, and Kindle accepts EPUB through Send to Kindle.
