Why convert XLSX to ODS?
- Open standards — submit documents where OpenDocument is required.
- LibreOffice users — give colleagues a file in their native format.
How the conversion works
The Excel workbook is read with SheetJS and written as an OpenDocument spreadsheet, keeping sheets, values, formulas and number formats.
What is an XLSX file?
XLSX is Microsoft Excel’s default workbook format since 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. A workbook can contain several sheets, each a grid of cells holding text, numbers, dates or formulas, together with formatting, charts and comments. Inside, it is a ZIP archive of XML files.
XLSX opens in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers and Hancom Cell. Files ending in .xlsm are the same format with macros enabled.
What is an ODS file?
ODS (OpenDocument Spreadsheet) is the open, ISO-standardised spreadsheet format used by LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice, and widely required by public institutions in Europe. Like XLSX, it is a ZIP archive of XML files containing sheets, values, formulas and styles.
Excel and Google Sheets can open ODS files, but converting to XLSX gives the best compatibility with Microsoft Office users.
