Why convert XLSX to JSON?

  • Feed apps and APIs — load spreadsheet data into web apps, mock APIs or databases.
  • Scripting — JSON is easy to work with in JavaScript, Python and most languages.
  • Configuration and content — maintain data in a spreadsheet, publish it as JSON.

How the conversion works

Each selected sheet is read with SheetJS. Rows are turned into objects (or arrays) with values in their native types, empty rows are skipped, and the result is formatted as readable, indented JSON.

What is an XLSX file?

XLSX is Microsoft Excel’s default workbook format since 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. A workbook can contain several sheets, each a grid of cells holding text, numbers, dates or formulas, together with formatting, charts and comments. Inside, it is a ZIP archive of XML files.

XLSX opens in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers and Hancom Cell. Files ending in .xlsm are the same format with macros enabled.

What is a JSON file?

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is the standard text format for structured data on the web. It represents objects as {"key": value} pairs and lists as [ … ], with strings, numbers, booleans and null as values. APIs, configuration files and NoSQL databases all use it.

Tabular data in JSON is usually a list of objects — one object per row, with column names as keys — or a list of arrays, one per row.

Frequently asked questions

What does the JSON look like?

By default, a list of objects — one per row — where the first row supplies the keys, for example [{"name":"Pen","qty":2}]. Choose "List of rows" to get arrays instead.

What about several sheets?

With one sheet you get a list. With several sheets you get an object with one list per sheet name.

How are numbers, booleans, empty cells and dates written?

Numbers and booleans keep their type, empty cells become null, and dates become ISO text such as 2026-01-15, so they don't shift with time zones.

Is my workbook uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
