Why convert XLSX to CSV?
- Import anywhere — databases, CRMs, accounting software and analytics tools all accept CSV.
- Version control and scripts — CSV is plain text that works with Git, Python, R and command-line tools.
- Smaller files — no styles or metadata, just the data.
How the conversion works
The workbook is read with SheetJS. Each selected sheet is written row by row using the values shown in Excel, with dates rewritten as ISO dates. Cells containing the delimiter, quotes or line breaks are quoted automatically.
What is an XLSX file?
XLSX is Microsoft Excel’s default workbook format since 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. A workbook can contain several sheets, each a grid of cells holding text, numbers, dates or formulas, together with formatting, charts and comments. Inside, it is a ZIP archive of XML files.
XLSX opens in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers and Hancom Cell. Files ending in .xlsm are the same format with macros enabled.
What is a CSV file?
CSV (comma-separated values) stores a single table as plain text: one row per line, with cells separated by commas (or semicolons or tabs in some regions). Cells that contain commas, quotes or line breaks are wrapped in double quotes.
CSV is the universal exchange format for data — almost every database, spreadsheet, CRM, bank and analytics tool can import and export it. It has no formatting, formulas or multiple sheets, and it does not record its own text encoding, which is why non-English CSV files sometimes open with garbled characters.
