Why convert AZW3 to EPUB?
- Use any app — EPUB is supported by Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo and most other readers.
- Edit your own books — EPUB is easy to edit in tools such as Sigil.
- Future-proof — EPUB is an open W3C standard.
How the conversion works
KF8 stores each part of a book as a skeleton with fragments inserted into it, and keeps stylesheets in separate flows. The converter reads only the main HTML flow, follows the parts in reading order, resolves kindle:embed image references to the book’s image records, and writes everything out as EPUB 3.
What is an AZW3 file?
AZW3, also called KF8 (Kindle Format 8), is Amazon’s successor to MOBI. It supports modern HTML and CSS, embedded fonts and better layout. Inside, it uses the same PDB container as MOBI but stores each chapter as a skeleton plus fragments, with stylesheets kept in separate “flows”.
Books bought from the Kindle Store are usually DRM-protected and cannot be converted. DRM-free AZW3 files — such as those produced by authoring tools or library software — convert normally.
What is an EPUB file?
EPUB (Electronic Publication) is the most widely used open e-book standard, maintained by the W3C. An EPUB file is a ZIP archive that contains one XHTML page per chapter, CSS stylesheets, images, fonts, and a package file listing the reading order and metadata such as title, author and language.
Because the text is reflowable, EPUB adapts to any screen size. Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo and most other reading apps open EPUB natively, and Kindle accepts EPUB through Send to Kindle.
