Why convert MOBI to EPUB?
- Keep your library usable — MOBI support is disappearing from apps and services.
- Read anywhere — EPUB opens in nearly every e-reader app on phones, tablets and computers.
- Edit and organise — EPUB is easy to edit with tools such as Sigil or Calibre.
How the conversion works
The converter reads the Palm Database container, decompresses the text (PalmDOC and Huffman/CDIC compression are both supported), removes the trailing bytes Kindle adds to every text record, and splits the book at its page breaks. Images referenced by the text are extracted from their records, and everything is packaged as an EPUB 3 file with a table of contents.
What is a MOBI file?
MOBI is the Mobipocket e-book format that Amazon adopted for early Kindle devices. It is a Palm Database (PDB) container with compressed HTML-like text, images and metadata. Many older e-book collections and public-domain libraries still distribute books as .mobi or .prc.
Amazon has since moved to newer formats and no longer accepts MOBI for Send to Kindle, so converting MOBI files to EPUB is the easiest way to keep reading them on modern devices and apps.
What is an EPUB file?
EPUB (Electronic Publication) is the most widely used open e-book standard, maintained by the W3C. An EPUB file is a ZIP archive that contains one XHTML page per chapter, CSS stylesheets, images, fonts, and a package file listing the reading order and metadata such as title, author and language.
Because the text is reflowable, EPUB adapts to any screen size. Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo and most other reading apps open EPUB natively, and Kindle accepts EPUB through Send to Kindle.
